Deployable Air Traffic Awareness System Prototype

The Challenge

Current RAAF deployable air traffic control systems consist of a large tower and radar system that require heavy vehicles or aircraft to transport.

Sigma Bravo was asked to develop a prototype Deployable Air Traffic Awareness (DATA) system that was light-weight, low-footprint, rapidly deployable and easily setup to provide air traffic awareness in the event of natural disaster, humanitarian or other operations for the safe management of airspace.

What We Did

Working closely with RAAF Jericho Disruptive Innovation, Sigma Bravo used a range of networked sensors and combined them with smart IT in a compact kit to provide a common operating picture in areas where there is no air traffic management.

Results

‘With this new system, we can set up the kit in less than ten minutes and have the ability to see aircraft on a screen in real time, which allows a lot safer control of the airspace.’

‘The system allowed us to monitor the location of nearby civil and military aircraft without a radar. Additionally, the overlaying of this data on aeronautical maps greatly augmented our situational awareness.’

“The addition of this new system will enable Air Force greater flexibility to immediately deploy air traffic management capability to the mission at hand.’
